What is V2X?
V2X stands for "Vehicle-to-Everything" or "Vehicle to X", it refers to passing information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle and vice versa.
V2X technology covers:
- V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) is the exchange of data between a car and equipment installed alongside roads, generally called a "roadside unit" (RSU). V2I can be typically used to broadcast traffic conditions and emergency information to drivers.
- V2N (Vehicle-to-Network) is when a vehicle accesses the network for cloud-based services, also known as V2C "Vehicle-to-Cloud".
- V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) relates to the transfer of data between vehicles. Compared to what sensors can provide to the car, information transmitted via V2V technology can come from cars a few hundred meters ahead or even hidden cars from behind trucks or buildings.
- V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian) is the exchange of data between the car and pedestrians.
Smart Vehicle Connectivity and Telamatics
Imagine the possibilities of advanced connectivity. Car data, such as speed, distance, obstacle and gesture recognition, when shared intelligently between a vehicle, nearby vehicles and surrounding infrastructure, can tremendously improve traffic safety and enable new types of value-adding automotive services.
Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates are a must when maintaining cars that will easily be in traffic for more than 20 years. Connectivity can also change your entertainment experience, through the streaming of multimedia, in-car gaming or enabling 4G/5G Wi-Fi Hot Spots.
Take advantage of V2X and Car-to-Cloud-to-Car, by making your data flow between a vehicle, its surroundings and the cloud. The R&D experts have enabled millions of connected devices worldwide and pioneered the telecom industry’s journey into the cloud.
V2X: The Road to Safer Assistance and Autonomous Driving
With car operating systems running everything from infotainment to autonomous driving, vehicles are becoming ever more intelligent and less reliant on human operation. Vehicle users stand to benefit from safer, greener, and more efficient journeys thanks to copious sensors and onboard connectivity, while car manufacturers, tech companies, and communications providers have a whole new market to compete in.
V2X is the umbrella term for the car's communication system, where information from sensors and other sources travels via high-bandwidth, low-latency, high-reliability links, paving the way to fully autonomous driving.
There are several components of V2X, including V2V, V2I, V2P, and V2N communications. In this multifaceted ecosystem, cars will talk to other cars, to infrastructure such as traffic lights or parking spaces, to smartphone-toting pedestrians, and to data centers via cellular networks. Different use cases will have different sets of requirements, which the communications system must handle efficiently and cost-effectively.
VDA China Activities
China and Germany, as two major countries with booming automotive industries, both attach great importance to promoting the innovative development of the V2X sector under the wave of industrial changes brought by new information technologies. With the “Joint Declaration of Intent on Cooperation in the Field of Automated and Connected Driving”, relevant companies and industry organizations in both countries have been actively carrying out cooperative studies to explore together the research and development of V2X technologies and relevant potential industrialized applications.
Therefore, VDA China has initiated different cooperation with Chinese partners, e.g., the V2X project with China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), in order to jointly research on the path of commercializing C-V2X function in Chinese market, to explore development patterns of the ICV and smart city industry with publishment of White Paper Report and carrying out the validation test.
